Evasive Alonso teases reporters on his F1 future
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso teased reporters on the eve of his home Spanish Grand Prix on Thursday when asked if he had made a long-awaited decision on his future in Formula One.
After a disappointing season to date with Aston Martin in the new hybrid-era cars introduced this year, it was widely expected that Alonso would make an announcement ahead of the first race at the new Madring circuit.
But asked if a decision was due, he simply replied: "Not soon."
And when asked why he was continuing to delay, he added: "Because I think it's nice."
The 45-year-old preferred to remain evasive and ironic on the subject of whether Aston Martin were pressing him to make a decision, but made clear he was aware of other drivers speaking to team owner Lawrence Stroll about a possible vacant seat.
To explain his position, he said he was hoping that changes to this year's rules would make racing more enjoyable and satisfying next year.
"Next year, there is a step, in the right direction, hopefully," he added.
Alonso also revealed he was considering various options, including a possible switch to a different role with the team.
