Taiwan urges China 'stop political persecution' after Tiananmen vigil activists convicted

Taiwan called on China Friday to "stop political persecution" after a Hong Kong court convicted two pro-democracy activists over organising vigils to mark Beijing's deadly Tiananmen crackdown.

The Mainland Affairs Council, Taiwan's top China policy body, "expressed deep regret and sorrow" over the convictions and called on the Chinese Communist Party and Hong Kong government to "immediately release those detained in this case".
