Vor mehr als 1000 Fans im Stadion am Bruchweg trafen Mei Shimada (2.) und Isabella Jaron (31.) für die Gäste. Jaron war kurz vor ihrem Tor noch mit einem Elfmeter an der Mainzer Torhüterin Mamiko Matsumoto gescheitert (30.). Saskia Matheis (44.) sorgte zumindest für das erste Bundesligator der 05-Frauen.
Mainz war in der vergangenen Saison der Durchmarsch von der drittklassigen Regionalliga ins Oberhaus gelungen. Mitaufsteiger VfB Stuttgart war mit einem 2:1 gegen die TSG Hoffenheim in die Saison gestartet.
