Die Staatsverschuldung der USA ist erstmals auf über 40 Billionen Dollar (34,3 Billionen Euro) gestiegen. Entsprechende Zahlen veröffentlichte am Mittwoch das Finanzministerium in Washington. Demnach belief sich die gesamte ausstehende Staatsverschuldung zum Geschäftsschluss am Vortag auf 40,05 Billionen Dollar.
Damit stieg die Staatsverschuldung höher als von der Regierung und Experten bisher prognostiziert. Grund dafür sind nach Angaben von Experten unter anderem die Zollpolitik von US-Präsident Donald Trump, langfristige Zahlungsverpflichtungen in den Bereichen soziale Sicherheit und Gesundheitsversorgung sowie steigende Zinskosten.
