Jonathan Milan (25) vom deutschen Team Lidl Trek hat die Auftaktetappe der Benelux Tour mit Start und Ziel in Diest/Belgien gewonnen. Der Italiener setzte sich im Massensprint bei strömendem Regen nach 191,3 km knapp vor Olav Kooij (Decathlon/Niederlande) sowie Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step/Belgien) durch und eroberte damit auch die Führung in der Gesamtwertung.
Die Benelux-Tour findet parallel zur Deutschland Tour statt und kommt vom Profil her vor allem Sprintern und Klassikerfahrern entgegen. Die zweite Etappe führt am Donnerstag von Blankenberge nach Ardooie (173,9 km). Die Entscheidung über den Gesamtsieg fällt am Sonntag bei der fünften Etappe mit dem Ziel in Leuven.
