Der Chiphersteller Intel will weitere fünf Milliarden Euro in Irland investieren. Mit dem Geld sollen die Kapazitäten zur Produktion hochmoderner Intel-Xeon-6-Prozessoren und künftiger Chip-Generationen erhöht werden, erklärte der Konzern am Montag. Außerdem trieben die Investitionen Forschung und Entwicklung in Irland voran. Dem Unternehmen zufolge kommen die in Irland produzierten Chips in Hochleistungsrechnern und Rechenzentren zum Einsatz.
Die Investition werde außerdem Irland "als führenden europäischen Produktionsstandort" stärken und die EU bei dem Vorhaben unterstützen, den heimischen Markt für Prozessoren auszubauen, fügte Intel hinzu.
Intel hatte im April unerwartet gute Quartalszahlen vorgelegt. Demnach setzte der Konzern in ersten Quartal 13,6 Milliarden Dollar (umgerechnet rund zwölf Milliarden Euro) um und damit sieben Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. Im wichtige Markt für Künstliche Intelligenz hatte Intel dagegen zuletzt Marktanteile verloren.
