Key quotes from the second day of Wimbledon at the All England Club on Tuesday:

"The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything."

-- Serena Williams on her return to Centre Court, which ended in a battling defeat by Maya Joint.

"The whole process of opening the court and playing as a defending champion is for sure really emotional. Last year probably the most amazing thing in my tennis career happened here. So I felt it also today. It was a mix of different emotions. I'm happy I can have another chance to play on this court."

-- Defending champion Iga Swiatek broke down in tears following a three-set victory over Taylor Townsend on Centre Court.

"I mean, since I started playing, it was Serena, Serena, Serena. Yeah, I'm glad she's here. I'm glad also today I could play so well."

-- Italy's Tyra Caterina Grant saluted American legend Serena Williams, who played her first singles match in four years on Tuesday, after winning on her Grand Slam debut against Katie Boulter.

"I thought the outfit looked good. So yeah, I mean, we were going to do it either way. I couldn't really back out of it. But you show up in a full outfit and get snipped in the first round, you kind of look stupid. You look really stupid, honestly."

-- American sixth seed Taylor Fritz defends his fashion sense after walking on court in a white jacket and trousers.

"Today was a tough one for Katie. Now for me it was trying to kind of stay in my lane in a way and focus on what I needed to do. It's not easy by any means because ultimately you want the whole kind of household to keep on winning every day. I'll do what I can to be there for her."

-- Australia's Alex de Minaur was a winner on Court Three, just hours after his fiancee Katie Boulter was beaten in the same arena.

"He obviously wants to make a problem with the umpire, and then is trying to speak to me about it. We know with Dzumhur that he does that. He was just staring at me. I said: 'well, stop staring at me', something along those lines."

-- Britain's Arthur Fery used ear plugs to block out Damir Dzumhur's reaction to a controversial call, with the Bosnian ranting at his opponent and the umpire. Fery went on to win in four sets.

"It would be hard to believe at that time if you told me what I was going to go through over the next eight years, and even that the next win would be in eight years' time. Just knowing that I kept going, and I didn't stop even when things were really difficult. I gave myself another chance to be on this stage."

-- British world number 196 Katie Swan on her gruelling road back after a series of career-threatening injuries.

"Yeah, he picked up my towel from the court, and he came back to give it to me, because it was my last Wimbledon. He said, 'Don't forget that one'."
