In the past 48 hours, the work of photo and video teams at AFP have been massively rewarded by industry experts. Detailed review.

AIB: video prize for report on Syria by Colin Berthier and Gihad Darwish 

At the 2019 awards ceremony by the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Wednesday 6th November, Colin Bertier and Gihad Darwish’s report “Baghouz, the End of the Caliphate” obtained high commendation in the “Daily Journalism: Single report” category. AFP was the only news agency in this year’s finals.

 

Rory Peck: video prize for reports on Nicaragua by Luis Sequeira

Thursday evening in London, Luis Sequeira won the video prize for his reports on the protests in Nicaragua, depicting protesters’ arrests and clashes with police.

Phil Chetwynd, global news director at AFP: "It was a wonderful evening yesterday in London, particularly as the quality of competitors’ works was so great. In the prize speech, the judges repeatedly commented on how the events in Nicaragua were not really well known to the public in Europe, and wasn’t a story that was covered by many traditional media outlets. AFP has demonstrated a superb commitment to this story from the very beginning and it shows.

"Prix Varenne": video prize for report on Afghanistan by Noorullah Shirzada and two photography prizes for photos of Nigeria by Luis Tato and Mexico by Guillermo Arias

Yesterday, the judges at the “Prix Varenne” honoured AFP video stringer Noorullah Shirzada along with photographers Guillermo Arias and Luis Tato with:

The “Grand Prix Varenne” in the International Category by the Afghan photographer and video stringer Noorullah Shirzada for the report “Surviving loss in Afghanistan: A Family of Amputees“, tying with France 2 video stringer Florian Le Moal for his report “Afghanistan : des Femmes Candidates.”

The “Prix Photo International“ for Guillermo Arias (winner of the Visa d’Or News 2019 in September), recognizing his photo series “The Caravan”.

The “Prix Photo spécial du jury“ for Luis Tato, in acknowledgement of a photo taken from the first edition of the Special Report on the Fulani.

Chaired by Franck Riester, the Minister of Culture, the awards ceremony of the “Prix Varenne” will take place Tuesday 17th December 2019 in Paris.
