Two AFP exhibitions headlining Visa pour l'Image 2019

The 31st edition of the international photojournalism festival Visa pour l’Image takes place from august 31 to September 15, 2019 in Perpignan, with exhibitions of works by AFP photographers Guillermo Arias and Ed Jones at the Couvent des Minimes.

Guillermo Arias’ exhibition “The Caravan” documents the journey of thousands of Central American migrants traveling in large groups on self-called caravans to the United States in hopes of a better life; the challenges they experienced during their journey through Mexico, the difficulties faced once they reach the US – Mexico border and finally, the struggle and desperation to cross by any means the physical border barriers to pursuit their American dream.
Guillermo Arias, photographer based in Tijuana, had travelled the border between Mexico and the United States in February 2017, from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico for ten days over more than 3,000 km.

The exhibition "The Two Koreas – A Journey Across the Peninsula" aims to show snapshots of life from both sides of the Korean peninsula, which despite their shared history have been separated for more than 70 years. A series of portraits showing people from similar walks of life imagines the impossible: a time when they might stand together once again.

Ed Jones, photographer based in Hong Kong then Seoul, has been travelling to North Korea regularly since 2012 and more since the opening of the AFP bureau in Pyongyang in September 2016.

The work of AFP photographers will also be presented during screenings at Campo Santo : the French Yellow Vests seen by Syrian photographers (see the post on the Correspondent blog), the fall of Baghouz covered by Bülent Kiliç and Delil Souleiman and The Afghanistan by Farshad Usyan (winner of the first Shah Marai award).

For the 2nd consecutive year, Visa pour l’Image will also be exhibiting in Paris:

  • 2 screening evenings will be held in the Grande Halle of La Villette on September 21 and 22, 2019.
  • 1 large-format outdoor photo exhibition – including Guillermo Arias and Ed Jones’ exhibitions – in the park from September 15 to October 15, 2019.
