Tigray photos by AFP's Yasuyoshi Chiba exhibited in Japan
Powerful images from Ethiopia's ongoing Tigray conflict by AFP photojournalist Yasuyoshi Chiba have gone on display at a special exhibition which opened in Tokyo on Wednesday (February 2).
Chiba, who has worked at AFP for over a decade and is based in Nairobi, won the top prize at the 2020 World Press Photo awards and was recently named The Guardian's "Agency Photographer of the Year 2021".
His exhibition titled "Arrivals" features 35 prints, the largest more than two metres wide, shot in two locations: Mekele, the capital city of Ethiopia's war-torn Tigray state, and the Um Raquba refugee camp in Sudan.
Northern Ethiopia has been beset by conflict since November 2020, when the federal government sent troops into Tigray after accusing the region's ruling party, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), of attacks on federal army camps.
Thousands of people have been killed in the fighting and several million forced from their homes.
The free exhibition, supported by AFP and Japanese affiliate AFPBB News, will be open to the public in Tokyo from Feb 2 to Feb 21, and then in Osaka from March 16 to April 4.
