AFP wins awards at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar
The 2018 Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar Photo Contest recognized the work of five AFP photographers.
Jeff Pachoud was awarded first place in the Sports Feature category for an image of the 33rd edition of La Pierra Menta, the international ski mountaineering race, in March 2018.
He also won first place in the Sports Picture Story category for his series of black and white images of the 105th Tour de France last July.
In the Feature Picture Story/Essay category, Raul Arboleda won second place for his series of pictures of Alfonso Mendoza, alias “Alca”, a Venezuelan rapper. Mendoza was born without legs and after swapping his wheelchair for a skateboard became a symbol of how to triumph over adversity. He has been living in exile in Colombia since fleeing his native Venezuela.
The photographers Luis Tato and Angelos Tzortzinis received the second and third places in the Chris Hondros Memorial International News category for their respective coverages of the presidential election in Zimbabwe and the wildfires in Greece in July 2018.
Finally, Amer Almohibany received an Honorable Mention in the News Picture Story category for his work in Eastern Ghouta during the end of the siege of the region and its takeover by the Syrian army last April.
Founded in 1973, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar promotes photojournalism through an annual conference and contest judged by working photographers and editors.
