Rio football holds minute's silence for AFP photographer

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 13, 2017 (AFP) - Rio's first division football games Sunday planned to observe a minute's silence for AFP photographer Vanderlei Almeida, who died last week after a long career including frequent coverage of top Brazilian football.

The Rio de Janeiro Football Federation said Almeida would be honored at the games between Vasco and Palmeiras and between Botafogo and Gremio. Almeida, aged 60, died of cancer on August 7.

He began his career with AFP in 1996 as a stringer and became a staff member in 2000, working until shortly before his death.

His work included widely praised coverage of the weekly battles in top-flight Brazilian club and national team football, the 2014 football World Cup staged in Brazil, and last year's Rio Olympic Games.
