Ahead of the presidential elections in Sri Lanka, journalists must be extra vigilant when checking sources to avoid being misled. When false narratives circulate online, they can affect the situation on the ground and even influence how people vote. AFP’s award-winning, globally-recognised digital investigation team is pleased to support journalists with a webinar on how to tackle disinformation during elections including tools and resources to sharpen their digital reporting skills in the age of AI. Amal Jayasinghe, Colombo Bureau Chief

Amal heads AFP’s operations in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. He joined the agency in August 1987, following over five years as a reporter for Sri Lanka's main English-language newspaper, the Daily News. Amal has undertaken special reporting assignments for AFP in war-torn areas worldwide, including Afghanistan and Iraq. He is also a media trainer in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, having collaborated with several international media organisations.

Sophia Xu, Digital Training Manager for APAC

Sophia leads AFP's digital journalism training programme in Asia-Pacific. She joined AFP in 2020 as a regional digital verification editor. She has been a journalist working in digital newsgathering, UGC verification, fact-checking and journalism training since 2012 in various newsrooms globally. She has trained hundreds of journalists and students in digital journalism across Asia.

Harshana Silva, Digital Verification Journalist for Sri Lanka

Harshana has been debunking misinformation in Sri Lanka since 2021. Prior to his role at AFP, he led a local fact-checking team in Colombo and worked more than eight years as a journalist at the Sinhalese newspaper Lankadeepa.
